What to expect in this video tutorial

In this video Ronald shows us a special form of Sun Salutations A and B with the help of our yoginis Kumiko and Katja. This particular form is intended to build core strength. Kumiko is practicing the 'Flying Cat' form (Surya A) and the 'Gecko' form (Surya B) while Katja practices the trandtional form of the sun salutations. Watching the two synced to the count gives you a sense of how both correspond to the traditional count of Ashtanga Vinyasa.

Sun Salutations for your fascia

The variations of the sun salutations that we present here will help you to build core stability and to utilize that to conenct the arms with the legs. In the torso there is a helical fascial line that connects the shoulder blades to the legs. This 'middle helix' crosses over the abdomen and is specifically activated in this form. This is an excellent form to use for fascial fitness.

Sun Salutation A: The Flying Cat

In this special form of Surya Namaskara A you practice the flying cat in place of Chaturanga Dandasana. This switch out makes sense for a lot of yogis, in particular when the shoulders and core are not fully ready for the traditional form. In this Flying Cat form you are strengthening your core and activating the middle helical fascia of the torso. This will be a helpful exercise for anyone and your practice will benefit from it. It is definitely an excellent way to prepare for traditional sun salutations.

Sun Salutation B: The Spinning Gecko

In this special form of Surya Namaskara B you replace Virabhadrasana with the Spinning Gecko. This exercise invloves both the shoulder blades and the legs. Your corset muscles, known as the transverse abdominis, provide you with core stability. With the Spinning Gecko you address the entire middle double helix and activate it.

For whom is this video?

These special forms of the sun salutations are particularly interesting for thise who want to strengthen their core. A strong core is necessary for Chaturanga Dandasana or even poses like the headstand. Sometimes it is also exciting to try something new and see how it affects you practice and your body.
