Our breath is a unique and awe-inspiring phenomenon that more often than not goes overlooked in our daily lives. It is essential to life, and literally accompanies us the entire length of our existence on earth. Interestingly enough, we are able to overlook this wonder because it is an automatic process and functions without our willing it to happen. Nevertheless, it is important to take the time to appreciate and to use the potential that the breath has to impact our nervous system.
In the practice of yoga, working with the breath is called pranayama. Techniques used in the practice of pranayama are intended to allow us to actively experience and even control the breath in different ways. By working with the breath in such a close way, emotions such as stress, anger and agitation can give way to a greater sense of calm and inner peace. By tuning into the breath in a dedicated practice, we can move throughout our day feeling more relaxed and focused.
