The Musculus intercostalis externus is a skeletal muscle which runs between each space between the rips of the thorax. The Musculi intercostales externi (plural) run ventrokaudal (belly-tailward, in humans from the front and down) from one rip to the subsequent one.

The Musculi intercostales externi form together with the rips and the underling Musculi intercostales interni the chest wall. The contraction der Musculi intercostales externi lifts the rips and broadens the rip cage, so these muscles aid the Inhalation (Inspiration) („ helping inspirator“) and are considered part of the respiratory muscles.
