Each action (karman) bears fruit - that is, so long as we are acting from the perspective of out individual Ego (asmitā). We only experience, however, those fruits that are currently suitable to us.

The practice of Yoga transforms your perception (citta) in such a way that you can act independent from your Ego (asmitā). So long as you are acting (karman) under your Ego (asmitā) your actions will be motivated by either a positive, negative or mixed goal.

Dr. Ronald Steiner - modern transfer

For a yogi (yogin) a motivated act (karman) is neither white nor black. For others, it is one of three types x.

Dr. Ronald Steiner - historic word by word translation

x:Vyāsa describes the three types of action in more detail in his commentary:
  1. White: Actions directed outwards, with the goal of utilizing ourselves or others.
  2. Black: Actions directed outwards, with the aim of harming ourselves or others.
  3. White and Black mixed: Actions that partially utilize others and partially harms them.

Das Werk eines Yogin ist nicht weiß und nicht schwarz [jenseits von Gut und Böse], das der andern ist dreifach [weiß, schwarz und gemischt].

Paul Deussen - 1908

The work of an ascetic is neither pure nor dark and that of others is of three kinds.

Actions taken from the perspective of the Ego, i.e. motivated actions (karman) will bear fruit. But only those fruits will ripen for you (vipāka) which correspond to your current living environment.

Dr. Ronald Steiner - modern transfer

However, from these [three types of motivated actions (karma)] there is only manifestation of the inclinations (vāsanā) that prevent the maturation (vipāka) of these [motivated actions (karma)].

Dr. Ronald Steiner - historic word by word translation

Aus diesen [guten, bösen und gemischten Werken] geht nur eine solche Manifestation der Werkresiduen [im neuen Dasein] hervor, wie sie der Heranreifung jener [Werke in einer frühern Geburt] entspricht.

Paul Deussen - 1908
